January 24, 2010 Bolton Backcountry Festival
Bolton Valley and the Catamount Trail Association (CTA) have teamed up to provide a great day of backcountry skiing. The festival is a terrific opportunity to ski with like minded folks or, if you are new to the sport, take a guided first step into the world of backcountry skiing. All festival goers will have an opportunity to explore the Bolton backcountry, see some new products and learn some new skills.
The festival will feature a vendor village featuring new backcountry equipment and reps to explain how to use it all. Backcountry clinics will take place throughout the day. Clinics are geared to first time backcountry skiers and intermediate skiers. Guided tours of Bolton’s un-groomed backcountry trails, including the Catamount Trail, will be ongoing throughout the day. A guided tour is an excellent way to explore some new terrain without fear of becoming lost.
The Festival is held in the spirit of one of Bolton Valley’s earliest owners and ski pioneers, Edward Bryant. A native New Yorker, Bryant purchased 10,000 acres from the American Brass Company in 1922. He and the Bolton Mountain Club would hike into the valley and up the mountain to earn their turns before any lifts, buildings or even the access road existed on the property. Bryant’s name lives on at Bolton Valley as the namesake of the Bryant Cabin, which backountry enthusiasts rent out year round for camping.
Bolton and the CTA have worked together over the years and in 2008 Bolton granted an easement for part of the Catamount Trail, ensuring that the Catamount Trail will always run through Bolton Valley.
Backcountry ski gear is suggested for festival participants. We have limited selection of backcountry skis, call ahead to reserve equipment for the day. (802-434-6876) The festival starts at 10:00 a.m. at Bolton Nordic Center and is $25 per person. The entry fee includes a Nordic ticket, access to the clinics, tours and vendor village.

February 07, 2010 Mountain Hardwear Ski Mountaineering Race
The Randonnee Rally Race Series is a series of ski mountaineering races held at some of the premier resorts in North America. The Race Series tests the competitor's endurance, equipment and skiing skills while skinning up and and skiing down some fo the toughest terrain that these resorts and their surrounding mountains have to offer.
The short description of this event is that it's a backcountry race that starts at Mad River Glen and ends at the Lincoln Peak Base area at Sugarbush. The details are more like this...
Competitors begin at the Mad River Glen base and ski up the Antelope Slope. Once to the summit, they traverse the Long Trail to Mount Ellen, where they descend to the Slide Brook Basin via Rim Run, Lower Rim Run, and Lower F.I.S.
After ascending through the Slide Brook area on work roads, competitors take one of two routes - the recreational divison ascending Village Run to the base of the North Lynx Chair while the race division ascends up work roads to the summit of North Lynx Chair and then down to the base of that chair via Birch Run. The rest of the run is all downhill from this point, The rest of the course is all downhill from this point, with racers in both divisions continuing on Castlerock Connection, through Header, and down to the finish at the Valley House by way of the Lower Jester and Coffee Run trails.
Sound fun? Registration information can be found online at the USSMA website. This event is open to skiers, telemarkers, and split-board snowboarders, and will feature some of the fastest ski mountaineering racers in the U.S.
